If you thought recycling was too much hassle, think again! Here are 10 fuss-free tips to help your household start recycling.
1. Learn how to compost
Your food scraps may be more useful than you think! If you have a garden, consider emptying your leftover food scraps into a composting bin, instead of throwing them straight into the bin. If you keep this habit up, every few months you’ll have fresh compost to use in your flower beds or vegetable garden.
2. Learn to separate materials
Instead of throwing everything into a rubbish bin make the effort to separate items into three separate bins. The first bin should contain paper, cardboard and plastic, while the second bin should contain glass and the third bin non recyclable materials. The contents of the first two bins should head to a recycling plant instead of a landfill.
3. Don’t be so quick to throw items away
Most households throw away items that could serve another purpose. As an example, an old plastic container could be reused to keep clothes pegs or to store children’s toys. Before you throw away an item, consider whether there is a purpose you could use it for. Or if your crafty, consider using glass to create a beautiful mosaic.
4. Take reusable bags shopping
Most grocery stores give customers free plastic shopping bags to carry their shopping home, however, the majority of these bags end up in landfills. If you want to do your part to decrease wastage consider using a large reusable shopping bag instead. You may even end up saving money, as each year more stores start charging customers for the plastic bags they use.
5. Donate your old clothes
Chances are that you have a few bags worth of unwanted clothes sitting around in your closet. If so, consider donating your unwanted clothes to your local thrift store or charity store. By doing so you’ll free up extra room in your closet and will give someone else the opportunity to pick up affordable clothing items. To make things even easier some stores will even pick up goods from your door for free!
6. Purchase refillable items and concentrated products
Search your grocery store for household items that come packaged in refillable packaging. As an example, it’s possible to buy refillable ketchup bottles and dishwashing detergent bottles. As a bonus refill packs are normally significantly cheaper than buying a whole new product so you’ll be doing both yourself and the environment a favor. Also opt for concentrated products when possible.
7. Stop purchasing pre-packaged meals
Sure pre-packaged meals may be cheap and quick to prepare but more often than not they come in large plastic containers that are too flimsy to reuse for any other purpose. By buying fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch you’ll cut down on the amount of rubbish you compile each week. Plus, it is healthier eating fresh ingredients such as vegetables and fruit anyhow.
8. Donate old newspapers and toys to your local animal shelter
It’s worth contacting your local animal shelter to see whether they are in need of old newspapers as some animal shelters use newspapers to line their cages. If you have children who have old toys they no longer play with, it may also be worth asking your child if they would mind donating them to your local animal shelter as puppies and kittens love having new toys to play with.
9. Cut down on the amount of paper you use
If you still use paper, make sure to use both sides. By using both sides of paper you’ll go through half the amount of paper as you normally do! Better yet, type up notes on your computer. Not only will you save paper, but typing is way faster than writing by hand.
10. Opt for rechargeable batteries
Next time you purchase batteries, make sure to keep a look out for rechargeable batteries. Not only are they environmentally friendly but rechargeable batteries work out to be significantly cheaper than regular batteries as most rechargeable batteries can be recharged hundreds of times.
